The zombie couple trend, also called the AI zombie hug or zombie love story, is a vertical clip of about 12 to 15 seconds. One person has turned into a zombie. The other aims a rifle, cannot pull the trigger, drops it and runs into a hug. On the embrace, a hard match cut jumps to a warm, sunlit memory of the two of them.
Where it came from
It is widely credited to the Instagram creator @techmaf and an AI short called "CHOICE", posted in mid-September 2026. A repost by @damienstraker on 26 September, credited "Original idea: @techmaf", carried it into the English-speaking feed. Accounts of who was first differ, and earlier clips with a similar idea exist.
In early October people started generating their own versions from two photos, and one TikTok original sound was attached to more than a thousand of them. In Indonesia it is known as "Zombie Pelukan".
The four beats
- The turn. Cold blue-grey light, an abandoned place. The survivor aims a rifle at the one who turned.
- Can't do it. A close-up. Tears, the rifle lowers and falls. It is never fired.
- The leap. Arms spread wide, and the zombie leaps into them.
- The memories. A match cut on the same leap into warm golden light, both human again, in happier days.
The contrast between cold and warm light, and a cut on exactly the same pose, are what make it work. There is no blood and no dialogue.
How to make one
Upload one photo of each person, pick an opening scene and an aspect ratio, tick the consent box and press Generate. The shots, the cut and the memories are already written, and the video is ready in a few minutes.
Only use photos of adults who agreed to appear, and label the result as AI-generated when you post it.
